3 families receive $5,000 in furniture from Levin

PITTSBURGH — Top 100 retailer Levin Furniture & Mattress partnered with KDKA talk show host and investigative reporter Marty Griffin to give $5,000 in furniture to three families as part of the Furniture for Families program.

Three families in their communities received the gift of $5,000 in furniture from Levin, plus a $500 gift card to a store of their choosing. Families in need were anonymously nominated and chosen by The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Pennsylvania. This year’s recipients were Jason Perez, Mikhal Wallace and Shakira Freeman.

“At our company, we’re a family and this is what families do. We come together and give aid to those in need,” said Michael Lewis, sales training manager at Levin Furniture & Mattress.

Perez initially thought this program was a scam. He made the decision to move his family to a safer neighborhood for his children knowing that they would have to give up some of their belongings. They just moved from a small apartment into a new home with almost no furniture. All five members of their family were sharing a queen mattress to sleep.

Single mother Wallace got an early Christmas gift for her family. Her mother nominated her for the program as she moved out with her 2-year-old son and was struggling to make ends meet. Her mattress had a hole that she stuffed with towels, she did not have a place for her family to have dinner together, and her son did not have his own crib.

Freeman’s mother, Cynthia, nominated her family because they are passionate about giving back to their community and deserve to treat their kids to new furniture. The Freemans are going to purchase a new dining set for family dinners.
